Knitted Knockers
Thursday 23rd February 2023
We are very excited to announce that our Naturals Organic Cotton has been chosen by the charity Knitted Knockers UK as one of their preferred yarns following extensive testing.
Knitted Knockers is a UK charity that knit and crochet breast prostheses for women that have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Ladies that have undergone surgery are provided with silicone breast prosthesis by the NHS, which some have found to be uncomfortable, heavy and may rub against the scars left after surgery, causing rashes and pain.
Knitted Knockers UK want women to know that there is a lightweight, 100% cotton alternative that takes the form of a real breast, is soft against the skin and is breathable. Lynne Hawksworth, Chair of Trustees says: “Softness is so important as our knockers are, in quite a number of cases, worn against the skin, on top of the area operated upon, so it must not rub or irritate the area. Some ladies do use bras with pockets, but more and more are finding that they prefer not.”
The charity has a team of experienced knitters and crocheters based around the UK who give their time voluntarily to handcraft each bespoke knocker to a personalised request. They are made with love and filled with hope and are free of charge to those ladies who need them.
While Knitted Knockers UK doesn’t need any volunteers at the moment, we are proud to lead an appeal for financial donations to support their activities. Lynne explains why their work is so important: “It is amazing to us what our recipients say about receiving our Knitted Knockers. Ladies have said that they literally change their lives, whether it is allowing them to wear clothes they never thought they would wear again; or that they are more confident and stand straighter - quite often we are reaching for tissues.”
