Southwold Summer
Thursday 8th July 2021
Our July MAL is a gorgeous wrap by Helen Kurtz called Southwold Summer, launching on 8th July in the Stylecraft Make Along group.
We asked Helen what how she came up with such a lovely design: “The inspiration behind it was my love of the sea. Whether on a bright sunny day when the sky is a brilliant blue or a grey, winter's day when the wind is wild, I find it both relaxing and exhilarating to be at the coast,” she told us.
“It's my happy place. I chose the colours to reflect the sea on a summer's day, whereas my tester picked bright colours that you might see in the colourful rows of beach huts lining the promenade.”
One of Helen’s favourite things to do at the beach is to search for pieces of sea glass so she knew that she wanted to incorporate some glass beads into the shawl to reflect this. The recycled glass beads from Africa were the perfect find, and are used on the border, but you can also make the wrap without beads.
So how did she decide on which yarns to use: “I chose the yarns because I wanted to use a yarn that was both lovely and soft but that also had a beautiful drape. As it was designed to be a wrap to be worn in the summer, the Naturals Bamboo & Cotton and Organic Cotton yarns were an easy choice.” Because both yarns come in a wide range of colours, it means that anyone wanting to knit the wrap can have fun picking out their own colour combination.
That got us thinking about which colours we would choose, so the team came up with their favourite palettes
These are in Naturals Bamboo+Cotton
And these are from the new Naturals organic Cotton collection. Helen told us she is planning on knitting a brighter version for herself during the MAL, so make sure you join her over on the Stylecraft Make Along group next week.
The pattern is now available on Helen’s Ravelry page priced at £4 and if you join the MAL group you will get the 25% discount code for the Southwold Summer wrap.
